Domestic Abuse
Each year
between one and four million men and women in the U.S. are
victims of some type of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is
when one person in a relationship tries to control the other
person. The perpetrator uses fear and intimidation and may
threaten to use or may actually use physical violence.
Types of
Domestic Abuse
-
Physical abuse (domestic violence)
- Physical abuse
ranges from restraining to murder and can include pushing,
throwing, kicking, pinching, biting, slapping, grabbing,
hitting, choking, shaking, tripping, blocking, using
weapons, burning, and murder.
-
Verbal or non-verbal abuse
- Verbal or
non-verbal abuse involves psychological, mental, and
emotional control by threatening, destroying property,
hitting objects, yelling, name-calling, harassment,
embarrassing or making fun of someone, possessiveness,
blaming, making the person feel that there is no way out.
-
Sexual abuse - Sexual abuse is closely linked to
physical abuse and may occur together or after physical
abuse by forcing someone to participate in unwanted, unsafe,
or degrading sexual activity, ridiculing another person to
try to limit their sexuality or reproductive choices,
forcing someone to look at pornography, or forcing someone
to participate in pornographic film-making.
-
Stalking or cyber-stalking
- Stalking is
unpredictable and should always be considered dangerous.
It is harassment through repeated phone calls, following,
tracking, searching for someone, suddenly showing up where
the person is, sending emails, communicating in chat rooms,
text-messaging, monitoring phone calls, contacting family
and friends, damaging someone's home, car, or other
property.
-
Economic abuse or financial abuse
- Economic or
financial abuse is used to control someone by withholding
money and credit cards, stealing from the person,
withholding resources such as food, clothes, medication, or
shelter, or preventing the person from working.
-
Spiritual abuse - Spiritual abuse is used to
manipulate someone by preventing the person from practicing
their religious or spiritual beliefs, ridiculing the person's beliefs, or forcing the children to reared in a
faith that the person has not agreed to.

Yes, these
are alarming statistics. This phenomenon is prevalent in
our society today and you may be one of the millions in America
who are faced with or live with someone who is abusing drugs
and/or alcohol. There is hope - if drugs or alcohol are
preventing you from participating in activities in your Welfare
to Work Plan we can provide you with treatment and counseling
services free of charge.
We
understand this is an awesome undertaking for you and we may
allow participation in a drug and alcohol treatment program to
be your only activity for six months while you get clean and
